24/7

We left for our road trip on June 26th.  We’ll leave for Spain on September 29th.  During that time, Jeff has been off work and I’ve worked (about) sixteen – 4 hour shifts and one 8 hour shift.  October spent a week at resident camp.  That equates to A LOT of time together as a family.  24/7.  To be exact (okay, not be exact) that is three months of us being together without strict schedules, buses to catch, or clocks to punch.  We’ve drifted to sleeping until 10 am (and yes, including the children) and the kids going to bed at 10 pm with us following at midnight.  We’ve ALL gotten our monies worth from Netflix; whether it’s cartoons in the morning or movies for the adults at night.  This second setback in the Visa paperwork has kick-started us back into getting kids to return to their school work, DAILY!  (A kid at the playground asked October what grade she was in.  She said she was going into 3rd.  I smiled silently as I realized, everyone else is already back to school….they are no longer “going into” a grade!)  It’s allowed us some time to get stuff done that we were probably going to start throwing money (that we don’t have) at.  The time together has been nice a lot of days and crappy some days.  And I’m looking forward to our next adventure!

Car Sale

The last time we sold a vehicle in Washington, we did it ALL wrong.  We had been in Washington for about year, our old salvage title car needed to be sold and we sold it.  For cheap.  Except for us it turned into quite the opposite.  In Michigan, the plates are removed and kept with the current owner while the seller gets the plateless car and signed title.  At least this is what I recall.  I could be wrong.  But in Washington, the seller must report the sale or will be held responsible for what the purchaser does with the car.  We didn’t report the sale and the buyer didn’t either.  The buyer didn’t even try to register it in their name.  So when the buyer had to abandon the car on the highway (for who knows why) they didn’t bother to come back for it….which left us responsible for the towing and impound fees for a vehicle we thought we had sold.  Yeah, it sucked.  This time around, I read the instructions SEVERAL times over.  We sold our mini-van, “Sally” on Wednesday.  I was sad to let  it go.  The girls and I cleaned it, got new hubcaps and took pictures.  Listed it on craigslist & AutoTrader.  (AutoTrader was a joke.  Just got a bunch of out-of-state offers to purchase it via PayPal sight unseen).  I listed it on Craigslist on a Thursday evening and didn’t have any real interest until late Sunday.  At which point I was sweating that maybe it wouldn’t sell.  I lowered the price $1,000 and then got 10-12 inquires, one right after the other.  I felt MUCH better and since I had so many inquiries and felt the price was fair to both parties I could say I was firm on the price.  It’s one thing to haggle at a garage sale but to take the time for test drives and kicking the tires, I didn’t feel like haggling.  The van had just been driven across the country, had lots of interior stains, not-so-regular oil changes and one seat that was a different color.  It does have brand new tires, brakes, battery and alternator.  And in comparison to what else was on the market for Toyota Sienna’s, it was fair.  The first people to look, bought it!  Yeah!  They had wanted to take it to the local auto shop for an inspection, but couldn’t do it until tomorrow.  I know, that’s what I would have wanted to do as a buyer, but as the seller with limited time and three other people scheduled to come look at it I wasn’t game.  I think it alleviated their concerns when I pulled out the brake job receipts from the exact place they wanted to take it to.  Jeff went on the test drive.  I went to the bank with them.  And the kids waved good-bye to Sally from their bedroom window.  I nixed the going down to give Sally a hug.

Delayed….again!

At our going away party a friend asked how I was *really* doing.  I replied “Well, I am crying at country songs.  And I know I’m not pregnant so I guess that means I’m stressed.”  I am stressed but also very excited and anxious about getting this grand adventure under way.  Two days after our going away party, we were told while our paperwork had been processed in San Francisco and it was now in Madrid waiting for authorization, stamping and then it would be mailed back to us.  So we could “get lucky” but really we need a plan B as it isn’t likely to have our paperwork by our flight on the 15th.  ARGH!  I had no idea our passports had to actually go to Madrid to be stamped and authorized.  Isn’t that what the Embassy in the U.S. does?  It derailed our frantic pace while we waited to hear if yes, we need to delay and if so for how long?  What tasks actually get done first depends a lot on when we leave.  Do I need to take the beds to storage now?  Do I start reducing the van price since it needs to go ASAP?  Or do I stand firm since I have another 20 days to sell it and in reality actually need the van to take my bed storage?  Pack the dishes and use paper only?  Or do I need to focus on touch-up paint and smaller projects since we’ll need our beds for another 20 days.  We changed the plane tickets; pushing the date out 2 weeks until September 29th.  I was so disappointed.  Even with all the stress of wrapping things up, I was ready to get to Spain.

Going Away Party

I debated for awhile on having going away party.  August seemed to be filled with social events and parties and it seemed making this circuit would allow us to say good-bye to everyone without having to plan, host or worry about a party.  I changed my mind when October asked me after one of these events if this was the last time she would see X.  Having a definite ending point, a going-away party, would be good for everyone.  It’s been long a time since we hosted a party and I’ve got to say I really miss hosting parties.  Somewhere along the long we just stopped hosting parties, sure, we’d host October’s birthday — but even that we avoided this year (Yeah, Indoor Skydiving!).  We hosted the party at a nearby park that we frequent that usually isn’t too busy and has a great circular bike path for the kids.  The weather was amazing…even hot.  The turn-out was good.  The opportunity to say good-bye was great.

As I have hauled groceries up our 3 flights of stairs, I can’t tell you how many times over how many years that I have thought to myself  “When we move, I am hiring movers!”.  Well we are moving and nope, no movers were hired.
